Daniel Ricciardo hit with five-place grid penalty for home race

MELBOURNE, Australia - Daniel Ricciardo has been hit with a five-place grid penalty for his home grand prix after Red Bull was forced into making an unscheduled gearbox change.

The Australian brought out the red flags in qualifying after crashing at Turn 14 on his first Q3 run and as a result required a new gearbox to be fitted.

Ricciardo will now drop to 15th on the Albert Park grid and faces an enormous challenge to score his first podium on home soil.

The Australian Grand Prix begins at 4pm local time.
