Radio Ga Ga: Australian Grand Prix

ESPN rounds up the best of the radio soundbites from the Australian Grand Prix, where Mercedes squandered what looked like a nailed-on victory and Fernando Alonso gave McLaren reason to believe in Renault.

"Where is my pit bord? It shouldn't be too difficult to put it out?"

It wouldn't be right to start the new season's radio feature with anyone other than Kimi Raikkonen -- he kicked off opening practice with this irritated message to his Ferrari pit wall.

"Thanks guys. Thanks for the grid penalty guys. Appreciate it."

Daniel Ricciardo reacts to the penalty he knows he is about to receive as he crosses the line at the end of FP2. The Australian had sped under red flags during the session, prompting a three-place drop for the local favourite.

"Fernando, Vertappen's spun. He's now the car in front of Sainz."
"OK. Speak up a little bit because it's a long race and you are losing the energy already."
"Mate, I'm here racing with you. The energy is high. Come on, let's do this!"

A feisty Fernando Alonso tries to get more energy from the McLaren pit wall in the early stages of the race.

"Kimi, Seb is lapping 28.5, yourself 28.7..."
"So, has he not stopped yet or..."
"Not yet!"
"Oh f--- you tell me now, you first say to me that you are not in a hurry! Don't f--- me up with this!"

Raikkonen fumes at Ferrari's strategy after being kept in the dark about Sebastian Vettel's elongated opening stint. The strategy, and the well timed Virtual Safety Car period that followed, helped Vettel win the race and meant Raikkonen had to settle for third.

"What just happened, guys? Why didn't you tell me Vettel was in the pits?"

A confused Lewis Hamilton reacts to seeing Vettel's red Ferrari peel out of the pit-lane ahead of him on lap 27.

"Was that my mistake, or...? Was I supposed to be going quicker between Safety Car 1 line?"
"Lewis, we thought we were safe, but thee's obviously something wrong."

Hamilton and Mercedes continue to search for answers as Vettel dictates the pace under Safety Car conditions.

"Just have a think how you want to approach the last part of the race, or do you want to attack every lap, or do you want to chill out and go again?"
"I don't wanna let him breathe!"

Daniel Ricciardo gives an unequivocal response to Red Bull about how he plans to approach the final laps as he applies pressure to third-place Raikkonen.

"Can I push yet? Let me know how much you want it, come on.... I'm going for it!"

Hamilton takes matters into his own hands and turns his engine up for one last attack on Vettel in the closing stages. It would last only a few corners, as the world champion ran wide at Turn 9 on the next lap.

"Yes, Fernando! P5 mate, P5. Great drive."
"Well done guys. Very proud of you. Long winter, long seasons in the past but now we can fight. We can fight."

Having endured three painful years with Honda, Alonso gives McLaren a motivational message after starting its new era with Renault power by finishing in fifth position.
