D.C. United acquire veteran Federico Higuain

D.C. United acquired veteran playmaker Federico Higuain on Monday.

The 35-year-old Argentina native had been a free agent since parting ways with Columbus Crew SC in October after eight seasons with the team.

In addition to his role as an attacking midfielder, Higuain will serve as a player development coach for D.C. United.

"Federico has consistently been one of the best attacking players in the league since 2012," general manager Dave Kasper said in a news release. "He has been a consistent goal-scorer and creator on the field, and we are looking forward to incorporating his MLS experience to bolster our roster this season."

Higuain scored 55 goals and added 63 assists in 193 regular season appearances with Columbus from 2012-19. He had one goal and five assists in 14 games (13 starts) last season.

D.C. United fell 2-1 to the Colorado Rapids in the season opener at home Saturday. They host expansion side Inter Miami CF on Saturday.
