The famous "This Is Anfield" sign has been taken down by Liverpool for the first time in decades.
In situ since Bill Shankly hung it over the tunnel step in the 1960s, the sign was originally devised as a means to intimidate visitors and bolster the home side. Liverpool players would traditionally touch the frame as they made their way out onto the Anfield turf.
The troubling scene was captured by the Reds' long-serving stadium announcer George Sephton, who was overcome at the sight of the sign being removed.
This happened this morning. I am REALLY freaked out by the image !! pic.twitter.com/7EBHMMEw2T

Demolition work began on the old main stand at Anfield just hours after Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Wednesday night, with fans reportedly tearing seats from their moorings to take home as souvenirs.
With that in mind, it's perhaps little wonder that the club moved so quickly to salvage the more iconic items of furniture scattered around the place.
It is expected to be returned to its rightful place once the new stand is complete.
