Michael Owen rejoins Liverpool as international ambassador

Liverpool have introduced former striker Michael Owen as the club's first international ambassador.

Owen will work to engage fans "around the world" and take part in commercial events, the club announced.

"As a Liverpool fan I am honoured and delighted to have been asked to play this international role for the club," Owen said in a statement.

"Liverpool FC is the world's greatest football family and it's great for me to be able to represent the club in an official capacity once again."

Owen, 36, played for Liverpool from 1996-2004 and won the Ballon d'Or while with the Reds in 2001.

The former academy product scored 158 goals in 297 appearances before moving to Real Madrid. He retired with Stoke City in 2013.
