United States international Terrence Boyd returned to the pitch last weekend, almost two years after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament tear.
The RB Leipzig attacker featured in the club's reserve match against Lok Leipzig on Sunday.
Boyd, 25, joined Leipzig from Rapid Vienna in the summer of 2014, but knee injuries have limited him to only seven appearances and two goals in two seasons.
This summer, Boyd began preseason early and trained with the club's youth team to build up fitness going into the final year of his deal.
On Sunday, one day after attending RB's 1-0 defeat of his former club Borussia Dortmund as a spectator, Boyd finally made his return for Leipzig's reserves in the fourth-tier derby against Lok.
"It's nice to be back on the pitch," Boyd told kicker after the 1-0 win. "But I was not happy with my performance. I could or even should have scored a goal.
"My body is top, and my knee copes with the full workload. My middle-term goal is to attack a place in the first team squad."
Elsewhere, United States attacker Bobby Wood scored his second Bundesliga goal in only his second match in the German top flight. However, it was not enough for Hamburg to secure a point at Bayer Leverkusen.
The former Union Berlin striker opened the scoring at the Bay-Arena after 58 minutes, but a 15-minute hat trick by Finish striker Joel Pohjanpalo ended Hamburg's hopes of landing their first win of the season.
"It's fun to see how he plays, and to also see the will he embodies to play," HSV coach Bruno Labbadia told reporters about Wood, who clocked up 21,298 kilometers during the international break with the U.S. and was a doubt for the Leverkusen match.
"We talked a lot, and he said that he rarely slept better after such a long journey," Labbadia added.
