By the Numbers: Lionel Messi tops scoring charts, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stays unbeaten

Liverpool maintained their 4-point cushion at the top of the Premier League with a thrilling 4-3 win over Crystal Palace. Wolverhampton Wanderers edged out Leicester City by the same margin. Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-0 -- and made Maurizio Sarri go full Jose Mourinho. Manchester United strolled to another win, 2-1 over Brighton and Hove Albion. Barcelona beat Leganes 3-1 to maintain a five-point gap at the top of La Liga. Real Madrid beat Sevilla 2-0 to climb over them and into third... they are now just 10 points behind Barcelona.

Here are the best of the numbers from this weekend's football action.

18

Lionel Messi tops Europe's league-goal scoring charts again (the top 5 leagues). He's got 18 - the man's going to retain that Golden Shoe, isn't he? Kylian Mbappe is second with 17.

And since you asked - Cristiano Ronaldo is joint-fifth with 14 (He, and Juventus, are slated to play later tonight - so hold on to that stat for a bit, eh?).

2

What a weird little nugget, this. James Milner has been sent off twice as a Liverpool player. Both times, it was against Crystal Palace. Both times, it was for fouls on Wilfried Zaha.

1

Palace are the first visiting side to score more than 1 goal at Anfield in the Premier League this season. They gave this one a real good go.

3

Diego Jota is the first Wolverhampton Wanderers player to score a hat-trick in the top flight since John Richards in 1977. The fun part of this stat? Richards did the deed against Leicester City too.

6

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer becomes the first Manchester United manager to win their first 6 league games in charge.

8

Unai Emery's Arsenal team have won more points in seven games against the 'big six' opponents this season than they did in the whole of the last under Arsene Wenger (they took 6 points from the 10 games in 2017-18).

9

PSG scored nine goals against Guingamp. NINE. Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani bagged hattricks. Neymar Jr., a brace. Since 2010-11, there have been 5 games in which a team scored 9+ goals in the top 5 European leagues, PSG and Real Madrid have done it twice (the other is Bayern).

10

Fabio Quagliarella has now scored in 10 consecutive Serie A games. Only one man has done better in the Italian league -- Gabriel Batistuta scored in 11 consecutive games in 1994.

51

No side in Europe's top 5 leagues has conceded more league goals than Fulham's 51. As for Tottenham, who beat the Cottagers 2-1 with a last minute Harry Winks goal, this is the first time they've won a PL game without Harry Kane or Son Heung-Min since March 2014!

55

When Manchester City come to town, you rarely see the ball -- but Huddersfield took that to new lows on Sunday. The Terriers are the first team in the Premier League this season to complete fewer than 100 passes in the first half of a game. They completed just 55. To put that into perspective, Fernandinho completed 63 passes in those 45 minutes.

100

In the process of beating Huddersfield 3-0, City also became the first team in Europe's top 5 leagues to have scored 100 goals in all competitions this season. They now have 102. PSG and Barcelona are 2 and 3 with 90 and 78 goals respectively.

284

Ballon d'Or holder Luka Modric has scored in back to back La Liga games for the first time... after 284 appearances.
