Carlos Pena's transfer from Chivas to Rangers agreed - source

A deal to take Mexico and Chivas attacking midfielder Carlos Pena to Scottish giant Rangers has been agreed, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to ESPN Mexico's Ivan Canada.

The 27-year-old is scheduled to travel to Glasgow for a medical and will then return to Mexico while he waits for a work visa, which isn't expected to be a problem. The move is set to be a permanent transfer from current Liga MX champions Chivas.

Pena burst onto the scene and was a key figure in helping Club Leon earn back-to-back championships in 2013-14 and went to the 2014 World Cup as a highly promising goal scorer and was touted to be one of Mexico's break-through players in Brazil.

In December 2015, Pena joined Chivas from Leon in a major transfer for the Mexican league, although it didn't work out well for the player and he was loaned back to Leon a year later.

Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha spent almost three years between 2012 and 2015 in Mexico at Santos Laguna and knows Pena well.

The Portuguese coach took over at Rangers in March this year with the intention of reeling in current Scottish Premiership champions Celtic, who ultimately finished 39 points clear of their Glasgow rivals.

The same source confirmed that Rangers are also in talks to bring Pumas' striker Eduardo Herrera to the club, although an agreement has not yet been reached.
