The New York Red Bulls waived forward Fredrik Gulbrandsen on Tuesday, less than two months into a season-long loan.
Gulbrandsen, a Norway international, moved from New York's sister club Red Bull Salzburg on loan in March, but that has now been cut short.
The 24-year-old said in March that he could leave the U.S. in the summer if he wanted, though New York later refuted that statement. He played in 11 games this season in MLS but only made four starts.
The move frees up Gulbrandsen to return to Salzburg, who could use some extra depth with their Champions League campaign beginning in the second qualifying round on July 11.
However, Gulbrandsen played sparingly before his loan to MLS and didn't appear at all after Dec. 17, and he could be headed for another loan elsewhere. The season in his native Norway is nearing its halfway point.
