Guangzhou Evergrande re-sign Muriqui from Vasco da Gama

Guangzhou Evergrande have re-signed the club's leading scorer Muriqui to a six-month contract as Luiz Felipe Scolari's side aim to complete a clean sweep of trophies this season.

Muriqui's return was announced on the club's website on Wednesday after the 31-year-old cancelled his contract with Brazilian side Vasco da Gama to return to the Chinese Super League after a three-year absence.

"Guangzhou Evergrande is pleased to announce the re-signing of the club's legendary player, Muriqui," Evergrande said. "Muriqui is joining the club as a free agent and the contract is valid for six months, with the option to extend.

"Muriqui contributed significantly to the club's 2010 China League One win, the Chinese Super League championships from 2011 to 2013, the CFA Cup and Super Cup in 2012 and the Asian Champions League in 2013.

"He has been awarded the Chinese Super League MVP, the Chinese Super League and the Asian Champions League top scorer as well as the AFC's best foreign player in 2013. He is widely recognised as a Guangzhou Evergrande legend."

Muriqui was top scorer in the Chinese Super League in 2011, a feat that earned him the nation's Football of the Year award and he scored 13 goals in 14 games as Guangzhou won the 2013 Asian Champions League.

He left the club midway through the 2014 season to join Al Sadd in Qatar before stints in Japan with FC Tokyo and with Vasco da Gama in his homeland.

His return sees Guangzhou fill their fifth and final foreign player spot on their roster and he will act as back-up to compatriots Alan and Ricardo Goulart.

Muriqui's signing is one of the highest profile moves of a quiet summer transfer window following a crack down by China's football authorities as they attempt to cool the market after rampant spending over the last 18 months.

With Guangzhou attempting to claim a seventh Chinese Super League as well as successfully defend the Chinese FA Cup and win a third Asian Champions League to go with the Chinese Super Cup they claimed in February, Muriqui brings added depth to Scolari's squad.

"At this late stage in the summer transfer window, and after full consideration of all aspects of the team and in order to maintain our target of winning four trophies this season, head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has proposed to bring back the versatile veteran, who also knows the club very well," said Guangzhou's statement.

"When Muriqui received the invitation from his second home, he cancelled the contract with the club he was serving at the time. He has joined the club as a free player with a very flexible contract. We believe that Muriqui will repay the club and the fans with his passion and effort."
