The Pittsburgh Pirates placed second baseman Nick Gonzales on the 10-day injured list on Sunday due to a groin injury.
Gonzales injured his left groin while running out an infield grounder during the sixth inning of Saturday night's 9-5 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said Gonzales will be sidelined "weeks, not days."
"Obviously, tough news about Nick," Cherington said on his weekly radio show. "Nick has quickly become an important part of this team, and he's a valuable player for us going forward. We'll get him back as soon as we can."
Gonzales, 25, is batting .258 with five homers and 39 RBIs in 65 games. He's also a strong defender and has made just three errors in 60 starts at second base this season.
Jared Triolo started at second base for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks, while infielder Alika Williams was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to fill the roster opening.
Williams, 25, batted .210 with two RBIs in 23 games with Pittsburgh earlier this season. He was batting .327 with nine RBIs in 27 games at Indianapolis.
Two-time All-Star outfielder Bryan Reynolds is expected to return for Monday's opener of a three-game series against the Houston Astros. He missed Wednesday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals due to a back injury and was sidelined for the entire three-game series against Arizona after being placed on bereavement leave.
