KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs lost cornerback DeAndre Baker to a broken left femur during Sunday's 38-21 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Baker was activated off the practice squad Saturday. With the Chiefs resting their top three cornerbacks against the Chargers after clinching the AFC's No. 1 playoff seed, Baker started and was having a big game with a sack, five tackles and a pass broken up before the injury.
He was taken from the field on a stretcher in the third quarter.
"My heart goes out to the kid,'' coach Andy Reid said. "He busted his tail and really did a nice job for us. He'll be able to come back from that, so that's a positive as we go forward.
"I'm just proud of the way he's handled himself since he's been here. He's been through a tough road here, and he comes in and he really has done a nice job concentrating on playing and he was playing good football. Kind of a freak thing that happened. I know he'll rebound from it.''
Baker, 23, was a first-round draft pick by the New York Giants in 2019. He was waived by the Giants in September 2020 while facing four counts of robbery with a firearm in connection to an incident in May. Those charges were dropped in November and the Chiefs signed Baker to their practice squad.
