Springbok verdict on Watson

Referee Andre Watson believes he was vindicated blowing England up at scrum time and defends the decisions he made in the Rugby World Cup final.

But some former Springboks have voiced their unhappiness at the decisions made by South Africa's foremost whistler and they also question the scrum interpretations that he was applying.

Keith Andrews (former Bok prop):

"I think that of the four debatable calls that Andre Watson made, he got one right."

"Watson was correct to blow up England loosehead prop Trevor Woodman for not engaging in the scrum when his hooker and tighthead prop had gone down."

"This can endanger the opposition when the scrum goes straight to ground."

"To call Phil Vickery for scrumming in on Australian hooker Jeremy Paul was not the right call."

"The English scrum was more powerful than that of Australia."

Vickery looked like he was scrumming in because the pressure that England were exerting caused the Australians to buckle, thus forcing Vickery in.

"The same when Watson blew up the entire English pack for scrumming up - the pressure they applied forced the scrum up."

Dawie Theron (former Bok prop):

"I believe that 60-70 percent of the decisions that referees make are the wrong ones."

I believe Watson's decision against the entire England pack was wrong. The Australians were under strain and they pulled out of the scrum because of the pressure from England.

However, I believe the law should change to allow a prop to pull out of a scrum. It's causing neck injuries if they stay down.

"I think Watson's interpretation on Woodman pulling out was wrong - if Woodman is not ready, he shouldn't have to engage."
