Culling process difficult for Putt

The most difficult aspect of naming the 26-man Counties-Manukau rugby squad for the Air New Zealand Cup has been who to leave out, coach Kevin Putt said today.

Putt has named a solid squad for their opening match against Otago at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland on July 29 but found fitting 33 names into 26 places does not work.

"The hardest thing is limiting the squad to 26 as stipulated by New Zealand Rugby Union," Putt said.

"We've become quite a close family unit over the last few months. It's hard leaving people out of the system."

Experienced midfield back Mark Lawson has missed selection as has Kevin Farrell plus several other players from the initial squad.

"Lawson was there the last time Counties-Manukau were in the first division and Farrell typifies the local community spirit," Putt said.

"It's exceptionally hard leaving people out but with the composition of the squad you have to look for cover of positions.

"I've tried to stress there will be a degree of attrition throughout the season and opportunities may still arise, however it doesn't make it any easier leaving players out at present."

Former Super 12 player and halfback Ben Meyer has been named as Counties-Manukau captain in a squad featuring Super 14 players Kristian Ormsby, Niva Ta'auso and Lelia Masaga.

"Ben has come into the province with outstanding leadership abilities and has been at the forefront of a lot of initiatives in the squad and organisation," Putt said.

Counties-Manukau have managed pre-season wins over Manawatu, North Harbour and Bay of Plenty.
