PH grouped with powerhouse teams Russia, Brazil in FIBA 3x3 World Cup

Forty teams -- 20 men's and 20 women's -- will converge at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan from June 8 to 12 for the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup.

The groupings for both the men's and women's divisions were announced on Tuesday through the event's official Twitter account.

The Philippines is bunched together with Russia, Brazil, Mongolia and Canada in Group C. Russia is the No. 3 ranked 3x3 team in the world according to FIBA's rankings, while Brazil is No. 4.

Serbia, Netherlands, Romania, New Zealand and Kyrgyzstan are in Group A. Slovenia, Poland, Estonia, Japan and Ecaudor complete Group B, while Group D consists of Latvia, Ukraine, Croatia, Jordan and Nigeria.

The top two teams from each pool will advance to a standard knockout round which starts at the quarterfinals stage, on the last day of tournament.

Last year in Nantes, France, the Philippine 3x3 men's team was represented by Kiefer Ravena, Jeron Teng, JR Quiñahan and Kobe Paras.

The roster for the 2018 squad has yet to be identified but Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Sonny Barrios said during the press conference in January that several players have expressed their intention to participate.

"It's very heartwarming because without naming names, we're getting a lot of volunteers from the PBA players, especially from those who have already played 3×3 here and abroad," said Barrios.
