ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Denver Broncos’ star-crossed 2015 draft class took another hit Monday.
Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said left tackle Ty Sambrailo, who tried to work through a left shoulder injury and missed the last four games, will be moved to injured reserve Tuesday, which will end the second-round pick’s season. The Broncos’ first-round pick, linebacker Shane Ray, currently is recovering from a sprained MCL in his right knee and is expected to miss several games, and tight end Jeff Heuerman, the team’s third-round pick, suffered a season-ending torn ACL during rookie minicamp in May.
“It’s really hard for him because this kid’s tried really hard,’’ Kubiak said of Sambrailo. “He’s probably going to go on IR (Tuesday), he’s going to have to have surgery. He’s got a pretty good injury, they don’t think it’s going to get better. It’s something that needs to be repaired.’’
Sambrailo practiced each day last week, but the Broncos listed him as doubtful on Friday and ultimately decided they didn’t like how Sambrailo’s shoulder responded to the added work in the days leading up to Sunday night’s game against the Green Bay Packers. Ryan Harris and Tyler Polumbus split time in the Broncos' win as Harris played 40 snaps and Polumbus played 27.
"We also kind of waited a few days after practice to see how it felt," Sambrailo said Monday. "It was pretty sore coming out of practice, so we wanted to see if it would bounce back or kind of be lingering. Moving forward, we each kind of thought that was the best decision for my future and hopefully the future of being a Bronco.”
Sambrailo said he suffered a torn labrum as a “bone issue,” which are bone spurs in the shoulder.
“We gave (Sambrailo) a chance to play through it, he wanted to play through it, he made it through a month, worked his tail off last week, but he just wasn’t able to do it,’’ Kubiak said. “We’ve got to get him well … he’s got a very bright future.
“I just know it was kind of like we’re going to see if he can maybe work through this, he may have a chance, that type of thing. So we went through the process, doing that, and last week was the big week of work, the banging, the pads, can he do this? We really thought there was a chance, but as we went through the week … our concern was how he was coming out of it the next day. He wasn’t responding so we have to do the right thing for his career.’’
Sambrailo suffered the injury when he landed awkwardly in an attempt to block Lions cornerback Rashean Mathis in the fourth quarter of the Broncos’ Week 3 win in Detroit. Following the next play, a false start by Broncos center Matt Paradis, Sambrailo grabbed his left arm and continued to support the injured shoulder throughout the remainder of the game.
He remained in the game following the injury and played every snap on offense. Sambrailo said following this past Thursday’s practice that “I’ll be fine, they just want to make sure about things.’’
Kubiak said he expected Sambrailo to have surgery within the next week. The Broncos will have a roster spot available when they move Sambrailo to injured reserve. Kubiak initially said the Broncos would work through their options, but the team traded for tight end Vernon Davis later in the day. Davis would get the roster spot as soon as he passes a physical to complete the trade.
The Broncos also have two rookie tackles on their practice squad -- Kyle Roberts and Antonio Johnson.
