ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Jim Bob Cooter’s name is already considered one of the best in sports. On Sunday, on the latest episode of the HBO show, “Ballers,” on Sunday, he received a little bit more cultural recognition.

In the show, Cooter was referenced by Miami Dolphins general manager Larry Siefert (played by Dule Hill) and Charles Greane (played by Omar Benson Miller) as a candidate for the team’s open head coaching job. His picture was there and everything.

And as soon as this happened, Cooter said he heard about it.

“Sure, it’s surprising. It was surprising,” Cooter said. “Something comes out of nowhere like that, take it in stride. My buddies were giving me a hard time about it, but that’s OK.”

In the show, Siefert referenced how well Cooter did with Matthew Stafford and how the Lions had played last year until Stafford got hurt. The team’s woeful run game -- still an issue -- was also brought up in the brief discussion.

Lions receiver Golden Tate jokingly said, “I hope that doesn’t happen in real life,” about Cooter leaving the organization for a head-coach gig.

This isn’t the first time Cooter, 33, has become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon. As a walk-on quarterback at Tennessee, his eye-catching name often brought up stories. Last year, there was a brief “Cooter For President” campaign started in Michigan -- brought up by Tate.

And Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, in a moment of levity Friday, was asked what he has to do to get name-dropped on the show.

“I’m gonna change my name,” Austin said. “To Jim Bob Cooter.”
