DETROIT -- Matthew Stafford moved past a couple of Hall of Famers in all-time passing yards Thursday while setting the mark for passing yards by a player under 30 years old.
It was a busy day for the Detroit Lions quarterback, who has steadily been moving up both lists over the past two seasons.
Stafford started Thanksgiving with 33,063 yards, No. 36 all time in passing yards and second among players under 30.
With a 17-yard screen pass to Marvin Jones Jr. in the first quarter against the Minnesota Vikings, Stafford passed Y.A. Tittle for No. 35 on the all-time passing list. Tittle, who was drafted by the Lions as the No. 6 overall pick in 1948 but never played for the club, threw for 33,070 between the Baltimore Colts, San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants in his career.
Later Thursday, on a 23-yard pass to Jones in the second quarter that got him to 33,140 career yards, Stafford moved into 34th place and ahead of Steve Young. Young had 33,124 yards for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and 49ers from 1985 to '99. Last week, Stafford passed his boyhood hero, Troy Aikman, in career passing yards.
After passing both of them, Stafford became the all-time leader in passing yards by a player under 30 with an 11-yard pass in the third quarter to Ameer Abdullah. Peyton Manning, another quarterback who worked with Jim Caldwell, held the record with 33,189 yards.
Next up on the list for Stafford is another familiar face, Phil Simms. Simms, at No. 33 on the list, has 33,462 passing yards.
