Packers make running back switch, don't activate Andrew Quarless

DETROIT – The Green Bay Packers made a change at the bottom of their running back depth chart hours before Thursday’s game at the Detroit Lions, when they promoted rookie John Crockett from the practice squad.

To make room for Crockett, the Packers released fellow rookie running back Alonzo Harris.

The two former undrafted free agents waged a competitive preseason battle for the No. 3 running back spot behind Eddie Lacy and James Starks. Although the 6-foot-1, 237-pound Harris won the job in large part because of his bruising style that resembled Lacy, he carried only four times for 19 yards and was inactive for five of the 11 games this season.

Crockett (6-foot, 217 pounds) was the Packers’ leading rusher in the preseason with 97 yards on 26 carries and one touchdown. The former North Dakota State standout also caught seven passes for 72 yards and a touchdown in the preseason.

Also on Thursday, the Packers decided not to activate tight end Andrew Quarless from injured reserve/designated to return even though Quarless returned to practice this week for the first time since his Week 3 knee injury.
