It was a cool story while it lasted.

Free-agent running back Terron Beckham, best known as the younger cousin of New York Giants star Odell Beckham Jr., wasn't able to parlay his highly publicized minicamp tryout last weekend into a contract with the New York Jets. The team has no plans to sign him now or in the foreseeable future.

A total of 22 non-roster players auditioned during the rookie minicamp and, as of now, only one received a contract -- Montana State cornerback Bryson Keeton.

The odds were stacked against Beckham, who hadn't played football since his high school days in Texas. He landed an invitation based on his freakish workout numbers at a recent mini-pro day in New Jersey, where he ran the 40 in less than 4.5 seconds, jumped 44 inches on the vertical and knocked out 36 reps on the 225-pound bench press.

Beckham showed up for minicamp with blue hair, adding to the curiosity level. He attracted a swarm of reporters because, well, did we mention he's Odell Beckham's cousin? Terron exuded confidence, saying he has the size (6-foot, 225 pounds) and skill set to replace Chris Ivory as the Jets' power back.

"I see myself as kind of that Chris Ivory-type of back, how he runs," said Beckham, previously a body builder and fitness model.

Todd Bowles offered a few kind words after the first day.

“Obviously, he’s quicker than I thought he was," the coach said. “I didn’t know what to expect with him coming in. But he’s quick, he studies and he learns. I’ll be interested to see what he does the next two days."

Evidently, it wasn't enough.

In non-Beckham news, the Jets claimed former New York Giants tight end Jerome Cunningham on waivers. He played in nine games last season for the Giants, making eight receptions. He'll replace Adrien Robinson, a former Giants draft pick who was waived to make room for Keeton. The Jets also waived running back/kick returner Dri Archer, formerly a third-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
