ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. They will change often, based on recent results and performances. Rankings are based on what a fighter has accomplished in the weight division in which he is ranked. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.
Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.
Vergil Ortiz Jr. is 2-for-2 at junior middleweight after scoring an impressive first-round KO victory over Thomas Dulorme Saturday night at Save Mart Arena in Fresno, California.
Ortiz (21-0, 21 KOs), of Dallas, has been dealing with a recurrence of rhabdomyolysis that forced him to postpone a fight with Eimantas Stanionis multiple times, but he's been very active in his new division. He moved to 154 pounds in January after a 17-month break and defeated Fredrick Lawson by first-round TKO. And even before his fight with Dulorme, it was announced Ortiz would fight former junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu on the Terence Crawford-Israil Madrimov undercard on Aug. 3.
Ortiz, who sent Dulorme to the canvas with a brutal body punch at 2:39 of the opening round, moves up two spots to No. 5.
"He was coming with everything," Ortiz said after the fight. "I can't explain how I know when to land a shot like that, I can just feel it. I knew it was over, he made a sound and the way he fell. ... I feel like everything is where it needs to be. I know you're watching this fight, Tim Tszyu. Just know I'm ready! I just want to fight the best. I don't know why, they bring me opponents and I knock them out."
In the main event, former junior welterweight champion Jose Ramirez struggled to avoid Rances Barthelemy's left hand, but ended up with a comfortable unanimous decision victory with scorecards of 118-110, 119-109 and 119-109.
"I dominated most of the rounds," Ramirez said. "There was only one round where he could've scored a knockdown, but a lot of the fight he didn't throw a lot of punches and he got overly excited. I think that was my mistake for being distracted in that moment of the round and keeping him in the fight."
Ramirez moves up one spot to No. 8 at 140 pounds.
Rankings are determined by Mike Coppinger, Nick Parkinson, Damian Delgado Averhoff and Andres Ferrari. They are updated weekly on Tuesdays.
