COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Texas A&M board of regents has authorized university president R. Bowen Loftin to complete the contracts of football coach Kevin Sumlin and men's basketball coach Billy Kennedy.
The contract of Sumlin, who was hired from Houston on Dec. 10, is for five years at $2 million a year. Kennedy, hired from Murray State in May, also has a five-year deal, but his is worth $1 million annually.
Sumlin takes over for Mike Sherman, who was fired after Texas A&M finished the regular season 6-6. Kennedy replaces Mark Turgeon, who left to become coach at Maryland.
Athletic director Bill Byrne says he is pleased regents authorized Loftin to complete both contracts on Tuesday. He also says both Sumlin and Kennedy are "excellent coaches" who will do a "great job."
