Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a shock home defeat to AmaZulu to end an intriguing day of Premier Soccer League action on Saturday.

Sundowns led early against Usuthu thanks to a goal from Thokozani Sekotlong, his first for the club since arriving from Free State Stars at the start of the season.

The Brazilians then missed a host of chances to double their advantage, and were made to pay as veteran strikers Siyabonga Nomvethe and Mabhuti Khenyeza both netted in the final 10 minutes to seal a famous win.

For Nomvethe it was a record 111th goal in the PSL, with his 40th birthday just six weeks away.

Chiefs and Pirates could not be separated at Soccer City in front of 70,000 fans as Thabo Qalinge hit the crossbar for the latter and Amakhosi goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune made a number of fine stops.

Willard Katsande was then also denied by Pirates keeper Wayne Sandilands in an exciting close to what was otherwise a largely forgettable spectacle.

Ajax Cape Town claimed a second win of the season as they defeated Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1 at Athlone Stadium.

Ajax scored their goals through Bantu Mzwakali and Tashreeq Morris, but faced a nervous final 20 minutes when defender Isaac Nhlapo put the ball in his own net. Celtic piled on the pressure but could not force an equaliser as Ajax hung on grimly.

Platinum Stars remain winless after nine matches this season but will be happy with a 1-1 draw away at Free State Stars.

Bongi Ntuli had the visitors in front from the penalty spot, but the teams went into the break level as Edward Manqele got his second goal in as many games for the hosts.

Neither team could find a winner in the second period and it will be Roger de Sa's side from the North West who will be most happy with the result.

In the other game on Saturday, high-flying Golden Arrows needed an injury-time equaliser from Zimbabwean forward Thomas Chideu on debut to rescue a point at home to Polokwane City.

City led early through PSL leading scorer Rodney Ramagalela with his sixth of the season, but almost immediately another Zimbabwean forward, Knox Mutizwa, equalised for Arrows.

City hit the front again on 73 minutes when Sammy Seabi put them in front, but Chideu popped up late to force the ball home and grab a point for the home team.
