Fernando Alonso hoping to take advantage of lack of Thursday running

Fernando Alonso is hoping to take advantage of the lack of Thursday practice at the Monaco Grand Prix to secure a higher grid slot on Saturday.

Wet weather meant running was limited in Friday practice and none of the drivers were able to complete a lap on the super-soft tyres. The quickest times in qualifying will be set on super-soft tyres, meaning all drivers will have a very short amount of time in FP3 to learn how the tyres are operating ahead of qualifying.

"I don't have the crystal ball to see into the future, but I will try to do my best on Saturday," Alonso said. "The conditions are changing and nobody had the chance to run the super-soft and that is probably good news for us because it will be some kind of unknown situation for everyone in qualifying and we can take advantage of the difficulties for everyone. Let's hope to have a good Saturday and a good grid position."

The McLaren-Honda is still down on power compared to its rivals, but Alonso said that is less of an issue this weekend.

"This is a very low power effect circuit, so the engine counts very little here and that makes us more competitive because there are very short straights and the chassis is responding well all through the season. Hopefully we can put some good laps in on Saturday, but we will see because in qualifying everybody seems to improve and we don't know until Saturday afternoon."

Pushed on what the car needed most, Alonso said he was not interested in details and just wants to start winning races.

"I don't know, this is the same question I was asked yesterday and I will be asked next Thursday and next Friday. I really don't care about the precisions, I want to win the world championship - it will not be this year, but this is a very important test and every race is very useful information. If it is eighth, if it is 12th, if it is 15th it will not change my life."
