Nico Rosberg frustrated by 'rubbish' Q3 in Canada

Nico Rosberg struggled to hide his frustration after being beaten to pole position by Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton in Canada.

Rosberg topped FP3 on Saturday morning, a session which saw Hamilton struggle to hook a lap together, and seemed to have found a good rhythm ahead of qualifying. In Q3 Rosberg was quicker in the final sector but then lost three tenths in the next two sectors, with the German taking to radio as he slowed down to say: "What a rubbish end to qualifying!"

After the session, which saw Rosberg finish 0.3s behind Hamilton, the German admitted the lap got away from him as he struggled to find grip.

"Yeah, that definitely was the best way to sum it up because I was really on a role and the end just didn't come together at all," Rosberg said about his radio message. "I was just struggling with grip and this and that, so it didn't work out and we need to analyse now what it was. It is really disappointing - just completely lost it there. There wasn't any major changes [between Q2 and Q3] we just lost a lot of rear grip. The first lap in Q3 was really good, actually, but the lap time was nowhere. It just went wrong, in the end ... That sucks.

"We need to analyse now what it was - I had less rear grip on the first set especially. It was a decent lap but just didn't go much quicker than that so it's disappointed. Anyway, fair play to Lewis and the race is tomorrow - still got some good chances and here it's possible to overtake, so it's not all over yet."

Rosberg was grateful the damage was limited to second on the grid.

"Well I had bad qualifying but am second on the grid and that's just thanks to the car we have and that's awesome and that still gives me hope for tomorrow. And here it's possible to overtake, it's a long race and a difficult race also, so still to play for tomorrow and that's good."
