Jenson Button says McLaren is still not in a position to think about scoring points ahead of its home grand prix at Silverstone.
Coming off the back of two tough races in Austria and Canada, McLaren endured a limited Friday practice session, with both drivers at the bottom end of the mileage charts in both FP1 and FP2. Button admits some of the delays were expected and some were not.
"It was very limited running!" the 2009 world champion said. "But it wasn't all planned, we had a few things that took longer to change than we expected. We found a little bit with the set-up towards the end of the day but there's a lot that needs to be done. We're not very fast here and high speed and straights don't seem to be our strength right now. I think tomorrow we will be better with some reasonably big set-up changes."
Button has already dismissed the notion of scoring points at his home race, one of the few on the calendar where he has never been on the podium.
"I don't think we'll be excited about getting in to Q2, just like we won't be excited if we finish the race, we want obviously a lot more than that. Again it's all about still understanding the package and every time we get out the car we're talking to [chief engineer] Peter Prod[romou] about how the car feels in the wind and the different angles of steering and everything. So it's still a massive test bed at the moment, we're not going to be looking for points this weekend unless something happens overnight, which I'll be surprised.
"It's all about learning and improving and giving as much feedback to the feeling of the car. Peter Prod is here - our main guy when it comes to aerodynamics - and you basically talk around a lap with him and tell him how the car is at different wind angles, steering angles ... That's what we're here to do really, it's testing and to improve. Unless you're fighting for a win, that's what you're doing."
