Max Verstappen was at a loss to explain Toro Rosso's "very strange" loss of performance between FP3 and qualifying after missing out on Q3 at Silverstone.
Toro Rosso's rookies sat fifth and sixth in Saturday morning's practice session, suggesting the team was in a good position for a strong finish in qualifying. However Verstappen was unhappy with the handling of his car from the beginning of Q1 - complaining the car was giving him "nothing" on the radio - and could only manage 13th, while team-mate Carlos Sainz finished eighth.
"It's very strange what happened ... probably oversteer, probably poor traction," Verstappen said. "To be honest I'm not sure what happened. We have to analyse what went wrong because to be half a second slower in qualifying compared to P3 is very strange."
Toro Rosso's pace over the race simulations was encouraging on Friday and Verstappen is confident he can still have a strong result despite starting from the seventh row of the grid.
"I think so," he said when asked if a good finish was still possible. "I mean if we can solve the problems normally it should be alright but first we have to solve the problems."
