Sebastian Vettel took Ferrari's second victory of the season at a chaotic Hungarian Grand Prix, which saw championship rivals Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg run into trouble and finish off the podium.

Ferrari gained the advantage from the start as both Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen took first and second from the two Mercedes on the front row of the grid. Hamilton then nearly collided with Rosberg at the chicane on the first lap and ran wide, dropping him down to tenth place by the end of the first lap. Hamilton fought back to fourth ahead of a safety car period, but clashed with Daniel Ricciardo while defending position at the restart and fell down the order again with a drive-through penalty to eventually finish sixth.

Rosberg should have capitalised on his team-mate's mistakes and was in a position to worry Vettel for the lead following the safety car, but instead came under attack from Ricciardo in third who was on the quicker soft compound tyres. After several laps of closing in, Ricciardo made a lunge for second on lap 64, but ran deep and then made contact with Rosberg on the exit of the corner. The incident punctured Rosberg's left rear tyre and dropped him to eighth at the end, while Ricciardo's front wing damage saw him cede second place to team-mate Daniil Kvyat soon after. Nonetheless, a double podium for Red Bull is by far the team's best result of the year.

Kimi Raikkonen was in contention for a podium during the first half of the race, but suffered an MGU-K failure while running second on lap 41, which later forced Ferrari to retire his car. Max Verstappen was one of the drivers to capitalise on the mayhem - despite a drive-through penalty of his own - and finished fourth ahead of Fernando Alonso, who took McLaren-Honda's best result since it rekindled its partnership at the start of the year.

It was the second race in a row in which Mercedes suffered from a poor start and Vettel did not hesitate in taking advantage around the outside of Turn 1. Raikkonen followed his team-mate and squeezed alongside Rosberg to take second place on the inside of Turn 2. Ferrari then showed impressive pace on the soft tyres and pulled a big enough advantage to defend its position from Rosberg at the first round of pit stops. Between laps nine and 19, Hamilton started to make a move from tenth and as he exited the pits after his first pit stops, he just squeezed ahead of Valtteri Bottas for fifth place.

On lap 29 Hamilton took fourth place from Ricciardo with a move around the outside of Turn 1, which was set up in the final corner of the previous lap when Ricciardo momentarily lost control of the rear of his Red Bull. Hamilton set about reeling in the two Ferraris and Rosberg ahead of him over the next 12 laps before a front wing failure pitched Nico Hulkenberg's Force India into the barriers at Turn 1, resulting in a safety car.

The top four all changed to medium tyres under the safety car, but by that time Raikkonen was over three seconds per lap slower due to a lack of electrical boost from his Ferrari's MGU-K. Rosberg quickly moved up to second at the restart as a result, but it was the fight behind that demanded attention. Ricciardo, who switched to soft tyres under the safety car, attacked the Hamilton around the outside of Turn 1, but Hamilton missed his braking point and smashed into the side of the Red Bull. The crash was clearly Hamilton's fault and the stewards penalised him accordingly before a late fight back to sixth.

Vettel, Rosberg and Ricciardo were then is a straight battle to the line, with the Red Bull looking the quickest on its softer tyres. On lap 64 Ricciardo made a lunge on Rosberg, but locked up and ran well wide beyond the apex. Rosberg took his normal line through the corner, but as he came across on the apex he misjudged Ricciardo's position on track. Rosberg came off worse with a puncture, but the stewards viewed it as a racing incident and allowed Ricciardo to race on with no more than wing damage.

Vettel went on to take victory to the delight of his team and dedicated the victory to Jules Bianchi, who all the drivers had paid their respects to ahead of the race with a moving tribute on the grid.
