GP2 and GP3 add extra non-F1 race to 2015 calendar

The GP2 and GP3 championships have added a non-Formula One round to their respective 2015 calendars to support the World Endurance Championship event in Bahrain.

When the German Grand Prix fell off the F1 calendar earlier this year it also meant GP2 and GP3 lost a round each, something the organisers had always intended to replace. While both events usually run alongside a Formula One weekend they will race at the Sakhir circuit on November 19-21, a week before the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

"I am pleased to confirm that we have added Sakhir to our 2015 GP2 calendar in November," GP2 Series CEO Bruno Michel said. "Ever since the announcement of the cancellation of the German event, we have been working hard to try and add a round for our Series.

"It was important that we could keep the costs down for the teams, but also to find a venue that was an added value for the drivers. Bahrain International Circuit was the best option: not only is it a Formula One track, but it makes perfect sense to have it back-to-back with the final round of the season in Abu Dhabi."

The Sakhir circuit hosted the opener of the GP2 season in April as part of the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend. It will mark GP3's first visit to Bahrain.
