Sebastian Vettel: Long-term answers still needed from 'very professional' Pirelli

Sebastian Vettel says Pirelli has been "very, very professional" in its investigation into his tyre blowout in Belgium but thinks lessons still need to be learned in the long-term.

Vettel's penultimate lap blowout at Spa, and his expletive-laden rant which followed, has dominated F1 headlines since Spa and prompted Pirelli to publish its full findings ahead of this weekend's Italian Grand Prix. Pirelli pinpointed debris as the main reason for his tyre failure after finding 63 cuts in all the tyres it used over the race weekend.

The Ferrari driver says Pirelli's investigation is going "the right way" and sought to clarify what he said immediately after the Spa race.

"First of all I think there was a lot of stuff explained or written that was not correct, the way it was expressed," Vettel said about his post-race rant. "I think it was very clear what I said ... I think it is not acceptable to have a blow up at that sort of speed out of the blue, I think that's what I said after the race, so there's nothing more to add.

"I think the investigations which have been going on, the things which got analysed and were talked about, the most important thing is that we make progress at the moment. From Pirelli's side it looks very, very professional, they handled it with extreme care, so I think things are going the right way."

Pirelli has advised teams on new camber and pressure limits for the Italian Grand Prix as a direct reaction to the events of Spa. Vettel thinks this is a good start but wants the encouraging early work conducted by Pirelli to continue to give the teams a greater understanding about the Spa tyre situation.

"We will see how it feels but if that's a short-term reaction for those first couple of days or weeks we have, that's one thing. Long term we need to understand properly what happened. It's very clear that everybody is trying to do his best. I think we had a situation a couple of years ago which wasn't acceptable and there was immediate change and we didn't have problems afterwards, so you can see the professional approach does work and it usually to the right results."

Vettel thinks it is natural for drivers to want to see improvements made with Pirelli's tyres as the sport is consistently evolving and becoming safer.

"Obviously our target is to improve the situation. I think it's natural that you always try to improve your product. If you talk about the cars today, the cars are quick and the cars are safe, they are surely safer than they were 30 years ago.

"But there is still room for making them safer, we still have accidents and so on and still things can happen. It's a one-way street, you want to keep making progress. I think that's more important than any press release, the feeling that I got from when I spoke to the engineers and spoke to Pirelli."
