Daniil Kvyat unhurt after 'rookie mistake' causes Q3 accident

Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat walked away unscathed from a scary barrel roll at the end of qualifying in Japan after what he labelled a "rookie mistake".

On his final run in Q3, Kvyat dipped two wheels on to the grass on the curved run down to the Hairpin and spun violently into the wall, with his car being flipped 360 degrees before landing upright. The session prematurely ended qualifying and denied those behind him completing their second laps, whilst also giving Red Bull a big job overnight to repair the car for the race.

Asked how he was after a precautionary trip to the medical centre, Kvyat said: "Good, thanks. It's okay ... More disappointment than pain."

"Just a rookie mistake, I put two wheels on the grass. There was no run off area and it was quite logical [ending] I think."

Kvyat finished tenth having not set a time in Q3 but may well face a grid drop if his wrecked Red Bull requires a change of gearbox overnight. The Russian driver apologised to his team for the extra work he had given them as it continues to face questions over its future in Formula One.

"It looks really bad, I must say! I'm sorry to the guys because it's been a tough couple of race and with this accident its extra work for the guys. We're starting P10 - I don't know what will happen now, I have no idea."
