GP2 to run new F2 series

The World Motor Sport Council has confirmed the GP2 Series will run the new Formula 2 championship.

The FIA has been working on reviving Formula 2, which last run between 2009 and 2012, along with a single-seater commission led by former Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali. Wednesday's WMSC announcement said it has now begun proceedings to formalise a contract with GP2.

"The World Motor Sport Council gave a mandate to the President to formalise the contract between the FIA and the GP2 promoter for the establishment of the FIA Formula 2 Championship to complete the FIA's single-seater pyramid from Karting to Formula One."

No date has been given for the return of the championship. The series currently has top billing on the FIA's superlicence point system required to enter Formula One despite the fact it is yet to be revived, suggesting it will act as the main feeder series.
