Carlos Sainz: We should have scored more points

Carlos Sainz was left frustrated following a ninth place finish in an Australian Grand Prix that promised so much for Toro Rosso.

Both Sainz and team-mate Max Verstappen looked set to challenge the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo for best-of-the-rest honours, but struggled with tyre degradation in the back half of the race.

"I think the car could have scored more points today," Sainz said after the race. "I'm not entirely happy because I think we deserved more than ninth. The result is definitely not what we wanted."

"This weekend with the pace we had we just didn't put everything together. We just didn't get everything right with the tyre choice maybe, the race was total chaos."

While clearly disappointed not to have scored more points, Sainz was adamant in saying he did all he could from inside the cockpit.

"I overtook eight or ten cars today on a track that is very difficult to overtake. I was not missing any overtaking moves."

Sainz and a frustrated Verstappen were locked in a battle for the second half of the race after a slow pit-stop saw the Dutchman lose ground on the leaders. In the closing stages the teenager clipped the rear of Sainz's car which caused him to spin. But Sainz says despite the contact the pair don't have any problems.

"We were all frustrated with what was going on but I absolutely have no problems with Max. From my side to him, nothing happened."

"Maybe Max and I are closer as team-mates than other team-mates. We are always within half a tenth of each other so it makes it tough for the team. But I think we are both mature enough to handle it. I think it's a healthy rivalry."
