Honda has confirmed Jenson Button will take on his second engine of the season for the Chinese Grand Prix after his race-ending failure in Bahrain.
Button pulled his McLaren off the road after seven laps in Sakhir, leading to a thorough investigation of his power unit. Drivers are allowed five power units, each of which are broken down into six components, a season before incurring penalties, and Button will take on his second ICE for the race in Shanghai.
Honda chief Yusuke Hasegawa said: "There was a mechanical issue on Jenson's ICE which we will replace for the upcoming race weekend. The situation has been thoroughly investigated, and will be rectified in all future engines to be used."
Button's teammate Fernando Alonso has also moved on to a second engine, though this was because of his heavy shunt with Esteban Gutierrez in Australia rather than a reliability gremlin. As it turned out, Alonso's injuries from that crash meant he missed the race but Honda was impressed by what his replacement Stoffel Vandoorne did with the new power unit in Bahrain.
"As we saw from Stoffel's pace in Bahrain, we have surely come a long way since last year. We still need a bit more overall package performance to tackle the long, one-kilometre straight in Shanghai, but it's reassuring to know that we're heading in the right direction."
Alonso is yet to be confirmed for the China race and will have a medical later this week to see if he has adequately recovered.
