Daniel Ricciardo impressed by Renault engine upgrade

Daniel Ricciardo wants Red Bull to run Renault's engine upgrade a race early in Monaco after testing the new power unit for the first time in testing.

The upgrade is scheduled for the Canadian Grand Prix and is expected to bring a significant step in performance for both Red Bull -- which uses TAG Heuer branded Renault engines -- and the Renault works team. Ricciardo is not expecting it to be a match for the class-leading Mercedes engine, but still praised the step forward Red Bull's engine supplier had made.

"The progress is definitely there," he said. "Now to make that next step will be...that is the last little step I think we are after to try to really get on Mercedes, but we are getting closer, and that is obviously exciting.

"Monaco will be our best chance yet. Obviously we had a good chance on the weekend, but for pure speed Monaco should interesting.

"Yes, I think so far we are pretty happy with how it is all looking, so yes we will see what they find tonight, but I think generally I was pretty happy with today and it was all pretty reliable and everything ran as smooth as it could."

Monaco is not a power-sensitive circuit like Canada, but Ricciardo still wants to see the updated engine in the back of his car next weekend.

"We will try to take what we can, but we will see. If we can get it, for sure we'd love it, but I think it is going to be a matter of time for now."
