Max Verstappen accident 'part of learning curve' - Christian Horner

Red Bull expects Max Verstappen to learn from his mistakes over the Monaco Grand Prix weekend after the 18-year-old crashed in both qualifying and the race.

Verstappen became F1's youngest winner two weeks ago in Spain, but despite showing bursts of impressive pace on the streets of Monte Carlo, he twice wrecked his Red Bull against the principality's barriers.

An accident at the Swimming Pool complex in qualifying resulted in a pit lane start on Sunday, and although he managed to fight back through the field to ninth position, he misjudged his braking point for Massanet on lap 35 of the race and wrecked his Red Bull against the outside barrier.

Team boss Christian Horner said the result was a reality check for Dutch teenager but refused to criticise his driver.

"He'd had a very strong first half of the race, he'd made some great overtaking moves, he'd made good progress and was running in the top ten," Horner explained. "He was pushing on because basically he saw that Rosberg wasn't that far ahead but unfortunately the conditions just caught him out at the top of the hill.

"He wasn't the only one today to be caught out, but it's been a very contrasting weekend for him compared to two weeks ago. It's all part of the learning curve that he's on and I think that the trajectory that you can see is still extremely impressive. I only think that he's going to learn and we won't see him make the same mistakes next year."

Red Bull promoted Verstappen from Toro Rosso ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix and Horner said the team has lost none of its faith in the youngest driver on the grid.

"He was very upset about what happened -- he apologised to the team. He's a bright, intelligent character and I think he'll take on board what has happened this weekend and he'll definitely move forward and learn from it."
