Ricciardo calls on Red Bull to up its game on race days

MONTREAL, Canada -- Daniel Ricciardo says Red Bull must start doing a better job on race days after he finished seventh at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The Australian started fourth on the grid, but was beaten out of the second corner by team-mate Max Verstappen before a two-stop strategy and a slow second pit stop saw him lose further positions. The result comes off the back of two missed opportunities for victories at the last two races and also meant Ricciardo slipped to fourth in the drivers' standings.

"Not a great Sunday," he said. "We've had good Saturdays but not great Sundays. Unfortunately we just couldn't get a good break, I would say.

"A few scrappy parts from my side and I would say from the team's side too -- it was not a clean race for both of us. I locked a brake into Turn 13 and damaged the second set of tyres and a few of the pit calls were a bit average again, so we need to clean a few things up for Sunday."

At the start, Ricciardo was baulked by Nico Rosberg as the Mercedes returned to the track at the start and then said he could not unleash the full potential from his car while stuck behind rivals.

"The start off the line we wasn't too bad and then with the Mercedes in front and Rosberg coming back on, I guess I was on the inside and couldn't get the momentum coming out of Turn 2. We lost the place to Max and then we had pretty good speed, thought we were using the tyres pretty well and I said on the radio I thought I'd be better in clean air.

"We were always behind someone and we couldn't use the tyres to their best. Even with the long DRS we couldn't get close enough to pass. Basically we were behind a car for most of the race and not using the tyres in the best way while in traffic and dirty air."
