Daniel Ricciardo explains Baku crash

Daniel Ricciardo said his accident during the opening practice session on the Baku street circuit was a result of carrying too much speed into Turn 15.

Ricciardo hit the barriers on the exit of the corner after losing the rear end as he passed the apex. The Red Bull driver said he was not pushing particularly hard on the entry to the corner, but realised soon after the apex that he was destined for an accident on the exit.

"I didn't brake that late but I think I came off the brakes too quick and I carried too much speed across the corner," he said. "Even at the apex I didn't think there was a problem and then I realised I had carried too much speed and the rear kicked out and it caused a lot of damage.

"On a positive note, the guys did a pretty awesome job to get me out there on time for FP2 and we got the whole session. Big thanks for that."

Ricciardo had an incident-free second session but was still 2.070s off the pace of Lewis Hamilton's best lap in the Mercedes.

"We weren't hiding much today at all," he admitted. "With these new surfaces, if you can get that tyre to work and find that next step of grip, I think it can equate with a big chunk of lap time. We have to find it but if we do overnight then we should be a lot closer tomorrow. Pretty much all of the Mercedes-powered cars look strong."
