Sebastien Buemi wins Formula E title after Lucas Di Grassi clash

Ex-Toro Rosso driver Sebastien Buemi claimed the 2015/2016 Formula E title in the season finale at Battersea Park despite a first lap crash involving season-long championship rival Lucas Di Grassi.

The ex-Formula One drivers headed into the final race of the season in London tied level on points after Buemi finished behind Di Grassi in fifth during Saturday's opener, before the former took three points for pole position on Sunday.

Di Grassi got alongside Nico Prost on the run into Turn 3 on the opening lap but misjudged his braking point and slammed into the back of Buemi, sending both drivers into the barriers. Prost inherited the race lead which he maintained throughout, as the Frenchman went on to record his second win of the weekend.

Both Buemi and Di Grassi were left with heavy damage but managed to continue at the rear of the field, having limped back to the pits to change cars. Instead of an anticipated race-long duel for track position, the title fight turned into a battle to secure fastest lap and with it two crucial points.

Di Grassi recorded a pair of fastest laps at the mid-way stage but Buemi ultimately came out on top with a 1:24.510s to claim the championship by the smallest of margins, while Prost's victory meant Renault e.dams successfully retained its teams' title.

After the race, the stewards handed di Grassi a drive-through penalty for causing the first-lap incident, however it made no difference to the ABT driver's result.
