Jenson Button: Reliability issues show McLaren is pushing the limit

Jenson Button says he does not mind McLaren's recent reliability issues as they come as a result of the team exploring the absolute limits of the car and engine.

Button's impressive sixth place in Austria was tempered by Fernando Alonso's late retirement with battery problems. It was the fourth time in five races McLaren has failed to get both cars to the chequered flag but Button says 2016 is the best time for the team to be encountering those problems as it remains a long way off the pace of Mercedes.

"In a lot of teams, cars are not finishing," Button said. "I don't think that's an issue. I'd rather be pushing things to the limit and getting better results and possibly having some reliability issues. We're not fighting for the world championship this year, far from it, so it's important for us to maximise what we have, enjoy the weekend, get the best out of what we have that weekend."

McLaren arrives at its home race with a Honda engine upgrade aimed at improving ICE efficiency. Despite his impressive result in Austria Button thinks McLaren's main focus needs to be on seeing a step forward from the engine.

"I'd say [Austria] was weather-depending rather than tyres. In the wet we were pretty quick and in the dry conditions we made the best of it. We put it P5, which became P3 and P2 for a bit of race. We were quickly put in our place. Considering that, P6 was not too bad. The three teams in front were a massive amount quicker than us so to beat the car that we did, we did alright.

"Coming here, I don't expect we'll be qualifying fifth unless we do get some really good British weather and have a good downpour, which I'm hoping for because I think we do have more of an opportunity, we'll see. The race is going to be reasonably tricky for us. Our car is very good in slow-speed corners. High-speed corners, we still don't really know. We do have some upgrades aero-wise. Engine-wise, it's moving forward. The guys are doing a good job at bringing something to every race. On the power side, there should a positive step for us on this circuit."
