James Allison has left his role as Ferrari technical director with immediate effect, ending weeks of speculation about his future.

Allison re-joined Ferrari mid-way through 2013 and helped contribute to its turnaround last year, which saw it claim three wins and finish second behind Mercedes. However, the team has failed to build on that success this season and is yet to win in 11 races despite high expectations of a title challenge coming into the season.

Allison's departure was confirmed on Wednesday morning with a statement saying the two parties "jointly" decided to part ways.

Team boss Maurizio Arrivabene said: "The team would like to thank James for his commitment and sacrifice during the time spent together, and wishes him success and serenity for his future endeavors."

Allison's 2016 season has been tinged with tragedy, with his wife dying suddenly after the Australian Grand Prix. He spent several races away from the paddock afterwards and reports in Italy had suggested he wanted to spend more time with his family in Britain.

Speaking on his departure, the Briton said: "During the years I spent at Ferrari, at two different stages and covering different roles, I could get to know and appreciate the value of the team and of the people, women and men, which are part of it. I want to thank them all for the great professional and human experience we shared. I wish everybody a happy future with lots of success."

Mattia Binotto will take on the role of chief technical officer at the team, moving across from the engine department. Binotto has been at Ferrari since 1995, joining as test engine engineer.
