Renault makes big changes to its power unit for 2017

Renault's Formula One power unit will feature a new engine architecture as well as a "second-generation" Energy Recovery System (ERS) this year.

The French manufacturer will supply Red Bull, Toro Rosso and its own customer team in 2017 and is hoping to reduce the deficit it has had to Mercedes' class-leading power unit since the introduction of the current engine regulations in 2014. Renault made significant progress with its internal combustion engine in 2016 and team boss Cyril Abiteboul is hoping for similar gains this year.

"This year we want to confirm the turnaround of the situation on the engine," he said at the Autosport International Show. "Last year was really fantastic, and we need to confirm that.

"We are going to have an all-new architecture on the internal combustion engine, and also be introducing for the first time the second generation of Energy Recovery System [ERS]."

Renault's main weakness in recent years has been its internal combustion engine rather than its ERS, but Abiteboul said there is still plenty of performance to be found from the electrical side of the power unit.

"There are an awful lot of collateral aspects to consider -- like weight, packaging, cooling requirements, plus the intensity of the current that you can use in certain conditions, in particular climatic conditions," he said. "There are certain things that look like they are secondary, but in F1 nothing is secondary.

"Once you have reached the top -- which is an MGU that can deliver 120KW -- you still need to think about these extra elements if you want make your way and reach the top as a team."
