Deng tops list of underowned fantasy players worth adding

Each Monday throughout the fantasy basketball season, we go around the league and identify highly available players (owned in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues) that can help improve your team in certain statistical categories.

Here are some players to target this week, with their ESPN ownership listed:

Points

Matz

Luol Deng, SF, Miami Heat (24.8)

Deng may not be the scorer he once was -- the career 15.5 PPG scorer is down to 10.6 PPG this season -- but if Chris Bosh is lost for the season as feared due to a blood clot in left calf, Deng is one of the veterans on the team that will have to take on more of a scoring load. For what it's worth, he has averaged 13.1 PPG over the last nine games.

Matz

Marcus Smart, PG/SG, Boston Celtics (41.5)

Don't confuse scorer with shooter, because Smart is shooting 36.5 percent though the first 101 games of his NBA career. That being said, the second-year guard is a stat-sheet stuffer who has averaged 12 PPG over the last 10 games.

Rebounds

Matz

Andrew Bogut, C, Golden State Warriors (30.6)

Bogut tends to be overlooked because he only plays around 21 minutes a game and is essentially a non-scorer at this stage in his career, but those who pay close attention know that he is a solid rebounder (7.5 RPG this season), shot blocker (1.7 BPG) and distributor (2.1 APG). He has nine or more rebounds in five of the last seven games.

Matz

Cody Zeller, PF/C, Charlotte Hornets (15.3)

Like Bogut, Zeller isn't nearly the scorer in the NBA that he was in college, but his rebounding prowess makes him a worthy streaming option if that's a category you're going after. Over the last five games, Zeller has pulled down 8.6 boards in just over 25 minutes per game.

Assists

Matz

Norris Cole, PG, New Orleans Pelicans (44.1)

Cole is underrated in a number of categories, but his ability to distribute the ball is what makes him an appealing option. The 27-year-old is playing a huge role in the Pelicans backcourt now that Tyreke Evans (knee) is out for the year, having averaged 5.7 assists in 30.5 MPG over the last 10 games.

Matz

Joe Johnson, SG/SF, Brooklyn Nets (49.4)

Johnson was on this list last week, and he remains on it this week because he's still owned in less than half of ESPN leagues. Though the 15-year NBA veteran tends to be hit or miss in terms of racking up assists, his big games can be very helpful. Johnson has eight or more assists in three of the last four games and is averaging 4.1 assists on the season.

Steals

Matz

P.J. Tucker, SG/SF, Phoenix Suns (23.6)

Tucker is playing close to 40 minutes a game these days, which makes him a very underrated fantasy option in more categories than just steals (like rebounds, assists and threes), but it's the steals category where he can help most. He came up with five steals twice in the last four games and is averaging 1.3 thefts per game this season.

Matz

Dion Waiters, SG, Oklahoma City Thunder (13.9)

Few people think of steals or defense when they think of Waiters, but did you realize he has averaged a steal a game through his first 265 NBA games? He also has come up with three steals in three of the last five games, as his minutes have risen into the mid-30s since Andre Roberson (knee) went down.

Blocks

Matz

Jerami Grant, SF/PF, Philadelphia 76ers (16.4)

If I had to describe Grant with one word, that word would be "bouncy." The super athletic 21-year-old also happens to be a very good shot-blocker, averaging 1.6 per game this season despite playing only 25.7 MPG. He has had four blocks in a game twice in the last five contests, and is readily available in most leagues.

Matz

Bismack Biyombo, C, Toronto Raptors (10.1)

Biyombo blocked six shots in 20 minutes against Minnesota last game, and that's the type of game that can really vault you to a win in the blocks category. The veteran enters the second half of the season averaging 1.6 blocks per game, and is a good option if you're streaming specifically for blocks.

3-Pointers

Matz

Jerryd Bayless, PG, Milwaukee Bucks (23.1)

Things may change if Michael Carter-Williams is traded for another point guard, such as Atlanta's Jeff Teague, but right now Bayless is a strong option if you're looking for threes. He has made 2.8 threes per game over the last five contests and averaged two per game over the course of the season.

Matz

Bojan Bogdanovic, SG/SF, Brooklyn Nets (4.5)

Looking to stream a 3-point specialist who is available in over 95 percent of ESPN leagues? Bogdanovic is your man. While he offers little else in terms of fantasy production, the 6-foot-8 forward has made 1.4 threes per game this season and is capable of busting out with huge nights from behind the arc, like his seven treys against the Kings back on Feb. 5.
