Paco Palencia is out as manager of Liga MX club Pumas following a disappointing start to the 2017 Apertura.
The former Mexico international exits following Tuesday's 2-1 home loss to Morelia, leaving the Mexico City club in 14th place in the Liga MX league table.
Pumas announced in a brief statement that Sergio Egea would take over in a temporary capacity, with former coach Guillermo Vazquez and Victor Manuel Vucetich possible candidates for the full-time job.
Club legend and ESPN analyst Hugo Sanchez distanced himself from the position on Wednesday.
The Pumas job was Palencia's first as a coach in a top division and he guided the team to the semifinals of the 2016 Apertura in his debut season. But Pumas finished the 2017 Clausura down in 17th position.
Pumas president Rodrigo Ares de Parga had seemed to assure Palencia of his continuity in an interview with ESPN last week.
