Argentine defender Jose Basanta is set to complete his move to Fiorentina after his club Monterrey confirmed that an agreement had been reached.

Basanta, who appeared twice for finalists Argentina at the World Cup, confirmed on Twitter that he would become a Fiorentina player.

He also thanked them in Italian "for all the good sensations" they had given him ahead of this "fantastic new step."

Meanwhile, Mexican club Monterrey said in a statement on their website that the Viola had activated the release clause in the 30-year-old's contract.

"Given this situation, the player has been given the authorisation to travel to Italy and undergo the required tests before, eventually, completing his transfer," the statement added.

"We have received formal notification from Fiorentina that they intend to cover the release clause in the contract of Jose Maria Basanta Catalan, who has expressed his desire to join the Italian club."

Basanta can play either in central defence or on the left, and will become Fiorentina's first signing this summer.
