Maurice Edu stays with Union on permanent deal, sources say

U.S. midfielder Maurice Edu has joined the Philadelphia Union on a permanent deal after the club agreed to a transfer fee with Stoke City, sources confirmed to ESPN FC.

Philly.com earlier reported the deal and said the club are likely to make an announcement on Friday.

Edu played all of last season with the Union while on loan from Stoke, scoring three goals in 31 MLS starts.

He also scored in a U.S. Open Cup match, and was named to the MLS All-Star team as an injury replacement.

The California native was in the last six months of the three-year contract he signed with Stoke in 2012, though he only made one appearance with the Potters before loan spells to Bursaspor in Turkey and then the Union.

Edu has 46 caps with the United States but last appeared in Jurgen Klinsmann's side during World Cup qualifying in the first half of 2013.
