Bayern Munich were indebted to a debatable last-gasp penalty winner from Thomas Muller to overturn a goal deficit at half-time and avenge last season's home defeat against Augsburg in the Bavarian derby.
Bayern surprisingly fell behind to Alexander Esswein's rasping drive just before half-time, in line with a very average opening 45 minutes. With minnows Augsburg providing obdurate resistance throughout, Bayern had to leave it late to turn the tide. Robert Lewandowski bundled home the equaliser with 13 minutes remaining, and the reigning champions had to rely on a hotly disputed penalty to seal the comeback victory. Douglas Costa ran into Markus Feulner in the box to "win" the spot kick, and the red-hot Muller converted with aplomb to extend Bayern's best-ever Bundesliga start under Pep Guardiola.
Here are the ratings as Bayern maintained their perfect record with four wins from four to match the much-improved Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table.

GK Manuel Neuer, 6 -- A predictably very quiet afternoon. Neuer could do absolutely nothing about Esswein's exquisite finish which threatened a shock.
DF David Alaba, 6 -- Buoyed by his national side qualifying for Euro 2016, the Austrian was full of pace and energy all afternoon, pressing forward at every available opportunity.
DF Jerome Boateng, 7 -- Bayern's rock at the back continues to display eye-catching passing quality, which has become a consistent feature of his game.
DF Rafinha, 6 -- The twice-capped Brazilian enjoyed his first start of the season at right-back and rampaged forward, when he could, like Alaba on the other flank.
MF Thiago, 7 -- Despite being not being the tallest player on the pitch, Thiago is decent in the air and only a brilliant save from Augsburg goalkeeper Marwin Hitz denied the diminutive Spaniard an opener on 20 minutes. He also might have done better but blasted over as Bayern searched for an equaliser in the second half. However, all those concerned with Bayern will be relieved just to see Thiago back and fit after his elongated injury woe.
MF Douglas Costa, 7 -- While there's nothing new about Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben both being out injured; the acquisition of Costa has proved an inspired piece of business. Another decent game from the Brazilian live wire as Bayern fought back from behind to win. Costa "won" the dubious match-winning penalty after Feulner's bodycheck in the final few minutes.
MF Xabi Alonso, 6 -- Alonso huffed and puffed but couldn't provide the spark to ignite a laborious Bayern side. The 2010 World Cup winner did have a second-half free kick well saved by the overworked Hitz, and caught the eye with a few trademark raking passes from deep.
MF Arturo Vidal, 5 -- Hooked off for Kingsley Coman before the hour mark and was strangely subdued throughout, despite returning prematurely from Chile during the international break.
MF Philipp Lahm, 6 -- Roamed the right side of Bayern's midfield in his typically unflustered manner. Subbed off for the third time in four Bundesliga outings, but the skipper had done enough to rally the troops for the turnaround win.
FW Thomas Muller, 7 -- Muller will turn 26 years old on Sunday and the penalty to win the game was an early birthday present in every sense of the word. But Bayern's top scorer didn't need a second invitation to bury his sixth goal of the current campaign and maintain his record of scoring in every league game this season. Barring unforeseen injury, Muller seems set to smash his personal-best scoring mark of 13 goals in a Bundesliga season.
FW Robert Lewandowski, 7 -- While the Polish striker scored for his defeated national side in Frankfurt against Germany, at least the precious goal on Saturday was in a winning cause for his club. Lewandowski scrambled home the vital equaliser with 13 minutes to play when Hitz failed to hold onto Muller's powerful drive for his ninth goal against Augsburg in nine games. Lewandowski could have easily notched the winner himself with five minutes to play, but was denied by a fine save by the goalkeeper. On another day, without Hitz in such inspired form, Lewandowski could have claimed a hat trick.
Substitutes
MF Kingsley Coman, 6 -- The new loan signing replaced the misfiring Vidal in the 56th minute as Bayern pressed for an equaliser. An OK debut from the talented French under-21 international, but he too often lacked the confidence to take on his marker, instead opting for the easy (backward) ball.
DF Juan Bernat, NR -- The Spaniard was a last-minute substitute, with match winner Muller receiving the plaudits in the Bavarian sunshine.
MF Joshua Kimmich, NR -- A belated Bundesliga debut for Kimmich to allow the skipper Lahm a standing ovation as the clock expired with the game in the bag.
