Red Star Belgrade midfielder Marko Grujic has confirmed he has held talks over a move to Liverpool.
The Liverpool Echo has reported that Liverpool are discussing a £5 million (€6.9m) move for Serbia under-21 midfielder Grujic.
Grujic, a member of the Serbia squad that won this summer's Under-20 World Cup, said he has spoken to Liverpool but he plans to remain in Belgrade until next summer to help the club qualify for the Champions League.
"I will do my best to show respect to the club [Red Star], the public and the supporters, but then I think I need to choose the best environment for myself in which I'll get my chance and work with good coaches in good conditions," he told Blic.
"Maybe something will happen, but there's no rush. I am certainly staying there [Red Star] until the end of the qualifiers for the Champions League. That works for Liverpool too. We had talks and I haven't made any deal yet. I am still a Red Star player."
Serbian tabloid Informer, citing a source, reported that Liverpool had made an €8m offer after scouting Grujic, who was linked with Paris Saint-Germain last month.
The source said the fee may be reduced if Grujic stays with the club until August, as the midfielder had suggested, and that Red Star would be more keen than the player to agree an early deal due to financial issues.
The report said a decision is expected in the coming days.
Red Star director Zvezdan Terzic told Informer that the club were unwilling to discuss Grujic's situation publicly.
"You know well that we from Red Star can only talk about something that has happened, but we don't wish to reveal any plans," Terzic said. "Whether Grujic leaves and where he goes is confidental."
