Roma's Ashley Cole a transfer target for Aston Villa manager Remi Garde

Aston Villa manager Remi Garde is interested in signing former Chelsea and England left-back Ashley Cole from Roma in January as he looks to bolster his side's fight against relegation.

With Villa bottom of the table having taken just six points from 15 games, Garde -- who took over from Tim Sherwood last month -- is keen to add experience to his ranks for the second half of the season.

Cole, 34, joined Roma in 2014 but has not featured in any of their matchday squads this season. He last played for the club in March.

Villa are without first-choice left-back Jordan Amavi, who is out for the season with knee ligament damage.

Garde told a news conference: "Ashley is someone who has experience, but he hasn't played for a while now. Every good player is interesting for me -- and he's a good player.

"I'm already working on that with the club. We know what we want to do. I feel we will need to improve the team to get more of a chance [of avoiding relegation].

"We are going to try to improve the team in the transfer window, but that is all I am going to say today. We have other games to try to win, and I am only focused on that."

Former Arsenal midfielder Garde was at the London club at the same time as Cole, but the two never appeared in the same side.
