Manchester United celebrate anniversary of Ryan Giggs' debut

Ryan Giggs, one of the most decorated players in English football history, made his Manchester United debut 26 years ago on Thursday.

Giggs made his debut for the club's senior team by entering as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat to Everton at Old Trafford on March 2, 1991.

His scoring touch emerged not long after, with Giggs' first goal in his first start -- a 1-0 win in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on May 4, 1991.

Giggs, who joined United's academy in 1987, went on to win the Champions League twice and the Premier League 13 times. He ended his playing career in 2014 with 168 goals in a club-record 963 games, the last four as United's player-manager, and holds the Premier League record with 162 assists.

He remained an assistant coach under Louis Van Gaal but left United after last season, ending a 29-year association with the club to pursue managerial opportunities.

Some Manchester United fan accounts have paid tribute to Giggs:

Most recently, Giggs was linked to the Swansea City vacancy after Bob Bradley was sacked in December. In February, he said he's not in an immediate hurry to return to coaching.
